MUMBAI: Retail stores in the city have been seeing a drop in the sale of butter owing to low production over the past couple of months. A key dairy development officer said there had been 20% less butter was produced in the state in the last month.
For Amrutlal Jakharia, owner of Popular Stores in Borivli (W), big packets of butter have been missing on his shelves.

"Nowadays, we get only 100-gm packets. Half-kg packets have not been in our store for the past three months,'' he said. Shirish Veerkar, general manager of Worli Dairy, blames the shortage on erractic monsoon. "Delayed rains resulted in a shortage of fodder, which led to low production of butter during the monsoon,'' Veerkar said.
Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation senior official (makers of Amul and Sagar) R S Sodhi, also blamed the rains for the shortage. He, however, said, "Now, the production has been normalised and hopefully, sale will go up in the next couple of weeks."
